Ah, the Cooper Test: Joy of Preseason

Searing heat, two-a-days, and enough Gatorade to fill Lake Michigan is the recipe for a great preseason. Preseason is a time when you can focus on soccer and nothing else. Classes and exams seem miles away. In fact, they are literally miles for players who just can’t seem to pass the Cooper Test and have to do it again and again until they make it. This is a myth. I have seen about as many sasquatches, three headed dogs, and loch ness monsters as I have seen coaches who make their players run multiple Coopers.

Like most situations that cause great duress, the Cooper leaves a lot of memories in its wake. A few personal favorites: the anxiety of the night before, knowing the impending doom you face; the miserable, miserable seventh lap; and the 800m runners who start at a breakneck pace, only to slow to a crawl after two laps. To those who are running this week, good luck!
